Turn-Around
Just Another Direction?

When we consider a Turn-Around, we sometimes think of going another direction. In this particular matter, we address the success or profitability of a business venture gone awry.

Most problems encountered in life are caused by inexperience or lack of seasoned, proper planning. In business this is called inadequate management!

Often a firm is started without proper consideration to the many keys necessary for true success. Sometimes a business is created by circumstances unique to the individuals. It can be one of many conditions:

  1. Family organization;

  2. Family pressure;

  3. Easiest course of action;

  4. Just plain lazy.

Whatever the cause, usually the outcome is business failure. This results in openings for the opportunistic entrepreneur.

  1. Lack of competition;

  2. Purchase failed business for customer base;

  3. Purchase plant & equipment at a bargain;

  4. Acquisition of needed employees;

Or there may be a better solution – the opportunity to salvage a bad situation and perhaps even the destiny of a poor manager, his family and employees. This is done through acquisition of the business and turning it around toward success.

If this is to be a feasible consideration, several things need to be present.

  • A viable enterprise.

  • Current owner with enough savvy to:

    1. Recognize the need for help.

    2. Enter into a contract and

    • Be willing to subordinate himself to new management, or

    • Remove himself from any administration.

    • Agree to receive no funds, or a very small amount, for the company.

  • Sufficient knowledge of the current business.

  • Sufficient capital to pursue the venture.

If all of these necessary ingredients exist, there may be opportunity for a profitable undertaking. Further, if the failed manager is pliable enough, consideration could be given to contract with him to repurchase the business after milestones demonstrate proper management.

Behold, the successful Turn-Around!!
