The God I Serve
I suspect when you read the title to this page, you immediately thought of the Sovereign Being of the Bible. To many, when the word God is mentioned, it is either in connection with cursing or in some fanatical religious exercise. To this writer, it is neither.
WHAT IS GOD, OR A GOD?
Let’s explore, what do we really consider God or a god? If we put something or someone first above anything else, would that be considered a god?
The primary definition of a god is:
something that is so important that it takes over somebody's life;
The primary definition of God is:
the being believed in Christianity to be the all-powerful all-knowing creator of the universe, worshiped as the only god.
CONSIDER THE ACT OF SERVICE OR SERVING
Further, what do we really consider the act of serving? Perhaps you consider the act of serving as one who is dominated by somebody or something; maybe you think its necessary for that one to be forced to work for somebody for little or no pay? Is it necessary for an individual to work hard, in bad conditions and meekly accept being ruled by someone else? If we look after the concerns and desires of something or someone, would that be serving?
What is the true meaning of service? Here are some definitions from Encarta:
work for somebody;
provide Customers with goods;
be in armed force;
work as servant;
be used for something;
assist somebody in a particular way;
spend time in prison;
deliver legal document to somebody;
worship somebody or something.
I’ll add some additional suggestions of my own:
true love dictates that we do exactly as the one loved directs;
place someone or something at the prime forefront of all situations;
let nothing deter your goal to satisfy and honor the one served;
let nothing take priority over that determination.
I believe that we as a people, who are taught from infancy to excel, to make our own way, to succeed in all that we attempt, have a tough time accepting servitude, particularly to a supreme being. In this hectic, fast paced world, pursuing our personal goals to provide for and take care of our families, it’s easy to let “things” get in the way of our predetermined priorities. In the past I’ve served many other gods, most unintentionally. Since I have always been a mover and shaker, pride, ego and success were great deterrents to following those right priorities.
Does any of this sound familiar?
A certain Bible scripture has been on my heart and mind for some time. It’s recorded in Matthew 6:31-34.
“31. Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed
32. (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
33. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
34. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof."
Matthew was talking about the cares and concerns of this world. He was teaching the people not to make food, clothing (necessities) the prime concern. Instead, if the people would make the things of God (spiritual things) the prime concern, God would see that those necessities were taken care of. This, of course, doesn’t mean that we’re going to be handed them on a silver platter without work. It does mean that He will see that our work efforts produce fruits necessary to take care of our everyday needs.
HERE IS THE GOD I SERVE!!
The God I serve is:
the Great “I AM”;
creator of heaven and earth;
creator of all that lives, including mankind, in His Own image (that includes you and me);
a loving master that cherishes and desires mankind as a companion;
an all-knowing and all-powerful God, full of grace, Who provided a plan for mankind to become a part of His family;
one Who sent His only Son, Jesus to be hung on a cross, shedding His blood to provide a propitiation for mankind’s transgressions, thus preparing mankind to be worthy to be a part of His family;
one Who raised Jesus from the dead and brought Him to His Throne Room as the Overcomer of the World and it’s Powers;
one Who accepted the blood of Jesus as an adequate sacrifice to pay the price of admission of mankind into His family;
one Who sat Jesus at His right hand, allowing Him to intercede for you and me;
one Who empowers Jesus to come to the earth and subdue all powers and principalities, setting up His earthly rule as King of Kings and Lord of Lords;
one Who will set up His Kingdom on the New Earth and rule and reign forever.
While I strive to never waiver, be the straight arrow, I still let “things”, “situations”, “personal desires”, etc., get in the way. I am thankful to report, however, I am much improved over what I was 20 years ago. The God I serve is faithful and has helped me in every way, in every need. It has not always been the help I thought I wanted, but it was the correct help I needed.
I invite you to study this God I serve, His Son, Jesus and His Holy Spirit by digesting God’s Operations Manual for our Life, the Bible. If you care to walk with Him, He will provide the care and direction you need through the Holy Spirit. I sure find it much easier to walk with Him, put Him first and in charge of my life than to try to do it under my own steam. If I stay out of the way, the outcome is never in doubt! It sure would have been much better if I had learned this much earlier in life.
It is my prayer that you find something to touch your spirit and cause that void, that is created without the walk with God, to be filled and overflowing. May God bless you and yours as you are obedient to Him.
To your best physical and spiritual health and success,
Cal
